The Fruitport girls basketball team got over the .500 mark on Tuesday with an exciting 40-38 victory over North Muskegon in a non-conference matchup.

Auebre Johnson hit a layup with about 30 seconds remaining, putting the Trojans up by five points. North Muskegon answered with a three-pointer to pull within two but could get no closer.

The Trojans trailed for most of the game.

Fruitport’s Grace Sweet nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer in the first quarter, cutting the Trojans’ deficit to 12-9. Fruitport trailed 22-19 at halftime and 30-29 after three quarters.

Fruitport’s Ash Olson scored seven points in the fourth quarter to allow the Trojans to steal the win at the end.

“In the second half (North Muskegon) was up by around six points, but we just kept plugging away,” said Fruitport Coach Brian Packard. “It was a very shot-making game. Neither team’s defense was great and we just kept matching them shot for shot for shot.

“It was kind of fun. The atmosphere was great.”

Olson paced the Trojans with 15 points while Johnson and Grace Sweet each finished with 12.

Fruitport is now 4-3 on the season headed into O-K Blue conference play.

“I would say we’re headed in the right direction,” Packard said. “There will be some games that will be big tests for us, starting on Friday night with Holland Christian. They are always a powerhouse. We are in one of the hardest conferences in Michigan when it comes to girls basketball.”

North Muskegon fell to 1-5 on the season.

Emma Buchmiller had nine points and seven rebounds for the Norse while Kaylee Martin, Abby Wiegers and Francine Vinson each added six points. Wiegers snagged eight rebounds and Martin had five assists and four steals.

“It was an exciting game and a tough loss,” said Norse Coach Sarah Knuth. “We played our best game of the season but fell short. Credit goes to the Trojans for controlling the game at the end.”
