The Western Michigan Christian soccer team captured a Division 4 district championship on Friday night on its own field with a convincing 4-1 victory over Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian.
The Warriors,12-8-2, now advance to the regional semifinals against Howardsville Christian next Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Holland Christian High School.
WMC’s Charlie Buursma started the scoring just four minutes into the game, volleying in a cross from Tekalegn Vlasma.
Eleven minutes later, Gavin Riksen lasered in a long shot with an assist from Jake Hwang to give the Warriors a 2-0 edge.
NorthPointe got on the board just a minute later, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and getting a shot off that WMC goalie Jared Olsen got a hand on but was unable to stop.
Ashton Leffring added another goal for the Warriors with 17 minutes left in the first half, taking a pass from Vlasma and burying a quick, well-placed shot.
Riksen got his second goal with 19 minutes left in the second half, with Vlasma getting his third assist of the game.
WMC outshot NorthPointe 20-5, with Olsen stopping five shots on goal.
