The Fruitport girls tennis team had its best day of the season so far, winning individual championships in three singles flights and tying for the team title at Saturday’s Fruitport Invitational.

The Trojans tied Ludington for first place with 15 team points. Cadillac finished with 13 points while Whitehall had five.

Three Trojans posted perfect 3-0 records and won individual flight championships – Grace Sweet (No. 1 singles), Audra Peterson (No. 3 singles) and Josalynn Nowicki (No. 4 singles).

Sweet defeated Cadillac’s Haylee Groen 6-3, 6-2; Ludington’s Hannah Glanville 7-6, 6-1; and Whitehall’s Brianna Bentz 6-0, 6-0.

Peterson beat Whtehall’s Alivia DeWildt 6-2 , 6-3; Cadillac’s Averee Heuker 6-0, 6-1; and Ludington’s Ava Johnson 6-3, 6-3.

Nowicki beat Cadillac’s Natalia Torrnado 6-1, 6-1; Ludington’s Kristi Killips 6-1, 6-0, and Whitehall’s Izabella Gould 6-2, 6-2.

Flight runners-up for the Trojans were Rachel Hines (No. 2 singles) and Bailey Poort and Abby Poort (No. 2 doubles. Taking third place were Tara Sweet and Lena Saffell (No. 1 doubles), Rylee Rufener and Emme Fecher (No. 3 doubles), and Gracie Farrell and Chloe Lopez-Woirol (No. 4 doubles).

“We continued to show improvement in many areas of our play in both singles and doubles,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. “This was a good sign since we had two canceled days of matches this week and missed that competition. These match wind came despite cold and windy playing conditions at the courts.

“Our team is looking forward to the week of challenges ahead when we play four out of the next five days. We will see what this team is made of.”eddie
