The Fruitport softball team experienced some walk-off excitement on Friday when Brylee DeWitt doubled and knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Trojans a 3-2 victory over a good Holton squad in non-conference action.

Kendall Lee and Ashton Olson drove in the other two runs for Fruitport. Olson led the way at the plate with three hits.

The Trojans’ pitchers were strong in the victory, combining to strike out nine and walk only one. Brooklyn Russell was credited with the win.

Fruitport did not commit an error. Olson successfully made 10 defensive plays.

“It was very good to see our girls play strong softball, play error-free, battle, battle, battle in every at-bat, then win it in walk-off fashion,” said Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman. “I’m very proud of how we played tonight.”

The victory followed a tight 5-4 loss to Holton in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

The Trojans battled and tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kalli Tawney (sacrifice fly), Maddy Kohnke (single) and Russell (walk) all knocked in runs.

Holton sealed the victory with a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Madyson Prout led the Trojans at the plate with two hits.

Fruitport, now 4-4 on the season, will visit Allendale in O-K Blue conference action on Tuesday.eddie
