Mona Shores has been a thorn in the side for the Fruitport volleyball team – at least at the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association tournament – for several years now.

That trend continued on Saturday when Fruitport, which is having another great season, fell to the Sailors in the tournament semifinal round 19-25, 25-20, 16-18 at Reeths-Puffer High School.

The loss seemed to take the steam out of the Trojans, who went on to lose the third place match to Reeths-Puffer 10-25, 25-14, 13-15.

Fruitport started the day with a 25-8, 25-22 victory over Ravenna and went home with a 1-2 record.

Izzy Hanson-Wilbur led the Trojans offensively with 28 kills on the day, along with five aces and 29 digs.

Emma Fecher had a great all-around day with 18 kills, 29 assists and 24 digs. Josalynn Nowicki added 11 kills with five blocks.

Porter Johnson led the defense with 40 digs and served aggressively, earning eight aces.

“We played tough today, and although it wasn’t the outcome we were hoping for, we were challenged mentally and physically,” said Fruitport head coach Samantha Fehler, whose team is now 26-8-2 on the season. “Today gave us the opportunity to recognize the small things we need to continue to improve on.

“Our goals for the remainder of season haven’t changed. This group is gritty and we know exactly what we need to focus on to continue moving forward.”

The Trojans, who are undefeated in O-K Sliver conference play, will host Kelloggsville on Thursday in the first round of the conference tournament.mini
