MUSKEGON – The Muskegon Lumberjacks really needed a win on Saturday night, and they definitely played like it.

They came into the contest riding a troubling four-game losing streak. While it’s still early in the season, they very much wanted to halt the slide and get back into the winning groove in front of a home crowd.

They did it by breaking a tie with two goals in the second period, watched their lead fall to one goal in the third, then adding two huge goals down the stretch in a 5-2 victory over the Youngstown Phantoms at Muskegon’s Trinity Health Arena.

Zacc Charbonneau led the Lumberjacks’ attack with three goals.

The Jacks, who improved to 4-4-2 on the season, ended the weekend with three out of four possible points in the standings. They earned one point in a shootout loss to Youngstown on Friday, then added two more on Saturday.

Lumberjacks head coach Colten St. Clair was not available for comment on Saturday night.

The Lumberjacks really showed their resolve to win the game during a key point in the third period.

Youngstown scored a little more than three minutes into the period, leaving the Jacks clinging to a 3-2 lead.

Things got even scarier a few minutes later when the Jacks were penalized, giving the Phantoms a power play and a big chance to tie the game.

Muskegon rose to the occasion in a big way.

First the Jacks killed off the power play to preserve their lead, then Maxin Simko scored six seconds after the power play expired – his second goal of the game – making the score 4-2.

Charbonneau added an open-net goal near the end, his third of the game, to secure the victory.
