The bottom line is that media coverage for athletic teams is not free.
Online sports media companies have to cover their expenses and pay their staffs, just like any other business.
For some bigger media outlets, it’s easier to sell advertisements to cover those expenses, because they cover high profile teams in the professional and college sports world.
Advertisers love to be associated with the big teams that pretty much everyone in Michigan roots for, like the Lions, Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings, Wolverines and Spartans.
It’s more challenging to find advertisers who are willing to open their hearts and wallets to support media coverage for their local high school teams and athletes.
Fruitport High School teams are very fortunate in that respect, however.
It all starts with the school’s unique relationship with MuskegonSports.com, the media home of Fruitport athletics.
Every year, through its website and social media posts, MuskegonSports.com provides game-by-game and match-by-match coverage for every Fruitport varsity team, in the fall, winter and spring seasons.
As a result, Fruitport varsity squads get more media coverage than just about any other high school teams in the area or state.
MuskegonSports.com posted approximately 300 Fruitport sports stories in the 2025-26 season
This is only possible through the generous and loyal support of what we call MuskegonSports.com’s “Trojan Media Squad,” comprised of nine area businesses that chip in to make sure the student-athletes get the public notice they deserve.
The roster is led by VanDyk Mortgage and its local manager Mario Flores, who helped to establish the website’s Fruitport coverage nearly five years ago. Johnson Auto Sales and The Storage Group jumped on board a short time later and have been great friends and sponsors ever since.
Completing their second year on the coverage team are Strategic CPA Accounting and Tax Solutions and Mini-Excavating LLC.
Completing their first year are Hazekamp Foods, Mike Rose Landscape and Irrigation, Cadena Brothers Pizzeria and Brock Carlston Nexes Realty.
Fruitport High School Athletic Director Jonny Morehouse understands the crucial contribution these businesses make, and released a letter expressing his appreciation for the special opportunity they provide to the school and its young athletes:
Dear MuskegonSports.com Sponsors – On behalf of the Fruitport Athletic Department staff, our coaches, and most importantly, our student-athletes, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for your generous support during the 2025-2026 school year.
Your sponsorship does so much more than just help fund a website; it directly fuels the spirit of our local sports community. Because of your commitment, our community enjoyed coverage that truly brought the Trojans’ season to life
Thanks to you, MuskegonSports.com was able to capture the heart of Fruitport athletics this year through hundreds of detailed articles tracking our teams’ journeys, thrilling game recaps that kept families and fans connected to every play, inspiring student spotlights that celebrated our athletes’ hard work both on and off the field, and incredible action photography that our players and parents will treasure for years to come.
Your investment ensures that our hard-working students get the recognition they deserve, while keeping the Fruitport community united and proud. We are incredibly grateful for your partnership and your dedication to local high school sports.
Thank you for being such an essential part of the Trojan family this year! Go Blue!

The Trojan Media Squad made sure that a lot of excitement was shared with fans in the 2025-26 season, because Fruitport had another great year in several sports.
Winning O-K Silver conference championships were the boys soccer team, the girls volleyball team, the boys basketball team, the competitive cheer squad, the boys bowling team, the boys wrestling team and the girls track and field team.
The Trojans also won Division 2 district championships in boys soccer, girls volleyball, boys basketball and boys wrestling.
The wrestling team also won a regional title.
One very exciting moment came when senior Riley Kanaar scored the winning goal in a dramatic overtime shootout as the boys soccer team beat Allendale in the district finals.
Another came when the boys basketball team beat rival Spring Lake and captured its first district championship since 1938.
Still another big night came in February when the boys wrestling team came from way behind to beat Greenville, then rallied again to beat Gaylord and capture its first regional championship in 41 years.
There are sure to be a many more great moments in the 2026-27 season – starting in just over two months in mid-August – and MuskegonSports.com and its media partners will be right on top of all of the action for the fifth year in a row.
MuskegonSports.com is looking forward to welcoming new members to the Trojan Media Squad for the coming season. The very popular website draws thousands of readers every month, and new advertisers can get on board for less than $100 per month!
