FRUITPORT – The Fruitport baseball team just keeps piling up the wins, and several players who don’t get a lot of headlines have been contributing a lot.
Senior outfielder Wyatt Fielstra is a really good example. He missed a big part of last season due to a bout with mononucleosis, fell a bit behind in his development, and this year hits near the bottom of the batting order.
But Fielstra has been a real hero lately, particularly in the past two nights.
On Monday he drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth inning to give Fruitport an important 4-3 win over Hopkins.

On Tuesday he did the exact same thing, driving in the winning run with another single in the sixth inning to give the Trojans a 3-2 victory over Comstock Park in the first game of a big doubleheader.
The Trojans went on to complete the sweep with a 7-3 win in the nightcap, and claimed their seventh win in their last eight games.
“(Fielstra’s development) was kind of delayed last year, because he just couldn’t get healthy,” said Fruitport head coach Nick Reed. “But he’s really been coming on lately. He can bunt, run and do a lot of different things. He learned under some of the best players over the last few years.”
Fielstra said he felt confident at the plate in both crucial situations over the past two nights.

“I’ve played a lot over the years, and I’ve been in those spots before,” he said. “I am just going to try to hit in those situations and try to help my team.”
Tuesday’s wins put the Trojans at 21-5 overall on the season and 9-3 in O-K Silver conference play. Their big victories over the past two days have kept them very much in the race for the conference championship.
Fruitport started this week two games behind both Hopkins and Comstock Park in the loss column. The Trojans split a doubleheader with Hopkins on Monday and swept Comstock Park on Tuesday to keep their hopes alive.
Hopkins now has one conference loss (courtesy of the Trojans), Comstock Park has two (again, thanks to Fruitport) and the Trojans have three. They only have two conference games remaining, but Hopkins and CP each have four, including two against each other – so anything is possible.

That’s particularly true considering the way Fruitport has been playing lately.
The Trojans won a pair of non-conference games on Saturday, then won three out of four games on Monday and Tuesday. They will finish a very busy stretch of seven games in five days on Wednesday when they play Hamilton in a non-league matchup at Fifth Third Ballpark, the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps.
“We’ve put ourselves in a position to have a shot (at the conference title),” Reed said. “It’s been busy, but we got two wins on Saturday, the split yesterday against a very good team, and we took two today. So hopefully we can win again tomorrow and it will be a very good week.”
Sweep over Comstock Park
Game 1 was a pretty clean victory.
The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Avery Lambers singled, stole second and scored on a Dexter Lillmars hit. They added a run in the third when Lambers reached base again and scored on a Hudson Hazekamp single.
Comstock Park tied the score 2-2, then the Trojans got the winning run in the sixth when Garrett Olson hit a single, advanced to second and came home on Fielstra’s hit.
Lambers and Lillmars each had two hits. Trevor Rusnak pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine.
Game 2 was a lot different, with quite a few defensive blunders for both teams, but the Trojans got a lot of timely hits and made some big defensive plays when needed.

Comstock Park took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, then Fruitport tied the game in the third when Hudson Hazekamp doubled and eventually scored on a throwing error.
A walk and two Fruitport errors gave the Panthers runners on second and third with one out in the third, but shortstop Satchel Norwood snared a line drive and quickly threw to third base to double off the runner, ending the inning.
Fruitport took control with five runs in the fourth inning.
Kolton Kennedy started things off by hitting a double, stealing third with a great slide, then scoring on an RBI single by Cam Bolger.

Bolger stole second and eventually scored in a wild pitch. Fielstra reached base on a Comstock Park error, then eventually scored on another error. Rusnak delivered an RBI single, Norwood added a single, then Garrett Olson hit an RBI single to make the score 6-1.
Comstock Park had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth inning, but the Trojans escaped disaster when they got a force out at home plate, then ended the inning with a nice double play from Kennedy (playing second base) to Norwood to Rusnak at first.
Fruitport added its final run in the sixth when Hazekamp, Rusnak and Dexter Lillmars singled, and Hazekamp scored on a passed ball.
Hazekamp, Rusnak, Norwood and Bolger each had two hits. Lillmars pitched a complete game, scattering 10 hits while striking out seven.
