The Fruitport baseball team lost a big early lead, then showed some grit in bouncing back for a 12-6 victory over Whitehall in non-conference action on Thursday.

The Trojans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, but Whitehall answered with one run in the first, two in the second and three in the third to take a 6-5 lead.

Fruitport turned the tables again with three runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-6 lead, then added one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to nail down the win.

Dexter Lillmars pitched a complete game for the Trojans, allowing six hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out six.

Garrett Olson

Garrett Olson had three hits, including a double, for the Trojans. Lillmars and Hudson Hazekamp each added two hits while Trevor Rusnak had three RBIs.

“We started out great offensively, but got a little complacent and let them back in the game with some physical errors,” said Fruitport head coach Nick Reed. “We were able to regroup and do what we needed to win, so it was a good recovery.”

The Trojans are now 11-2 on the season. They will compete in the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association tournament on Saturday.ministorage
