History was made on Tuesday night when the Fruitport boys volleyball team competed for the first time at the varsity level.

The Trojans lost a pair of matches, which was not surprising for a first effort, but they were not blown off the court by any means.

Fruitport fell to West Ottawa 21-25, 21-25 and Grand Rapids Christian 12-25, 12-25 at West Ottawa High School.

“It was so exciting to see the boys playing and showing off what we’ve been working on these last two weeks,” said Fruitport head coach Sam Moore. “So many big moments happened, and growth was seen each set.

“I am looking forward to this season and seeing the continued growth each player makes!”

Senior David Johnson-Jimemez, a football and basketball player who joined volleyball this season, led the Trojans with 10 kills while adding four digs and three blocks.

Tanner Cappema

Tanner Cappema had five kills and served three aces, and paced the defensive effort with 11 digs.

Ed Bouchard had 14 assists and six digs while Landon McMullin and Gavin Wilson added five digs apiece.

The Trojans will host Covenant Christian on Thursday.storagemini
