The Fruitport wrestling team has maintained its domination at the district tournament level.

The Trojans cruised to their fourth straight Division 2 team district championship on Wednesday with victories over Spring Lake in the semifinal round and Sparta in the championship match.

They now advance to a team regional tournament next Wednesday, facing Greenville in the semifinal round. The winner will advance to the regional final the same night.

“We earned it,” said Fruitport head coach Chad Johnson about the latest district title. “But the job isn’t finished. We’ve been building toward the team regionals since last season and we’re ready for the opportunity to compete.”

Wednesday’s 42-29 semifinal victory over Spring Lake was actually the closer of the two matches for Fruitport.

The Trojans gained their margin of victory by posting dominant wins, earning 15 bonus points for getting three pins (three bonus points apiece), two technical falls (two bonus points apiece) and two major decisions (one bonus point apiece).

Those seven victories produced a total of 36 points. If they had all been regular three-point wins, they would have only earned Fruitport 21 points.

Austin Jacobs (106 pounds), Murphy Lengkeek (138) and Chase Rosema (215) all picked up wins via pin against Spring Lake.

Alex Aardema (144) and Colton Smith (190) each won via technical fall while Rylan Thorsen (120) and Zachary Aardema (132) won by major decision.

Overall Fruitport won 7 of the 13 matches while the Lakers forfeited in one weight class, giving the Trojans a six-point bump.

Fruitport cruised to a 63-15 win over Sparta in the championship match.

The Trojans were dominant, getting pin victories from Jacobs (106), Thorsen (113), Emmitt Renauldo (126), Zach Aardema (132), Murphy Lengkeek (138), Blair Zimmer (157), Gideon Marksbury (165) and Adam Marjonen (285).

Kalan Teeter (175) won via technical fall while Davis Johnson (150) picked up a win by major decision.

Before next Wednesday’s team regionals, the Trojans will compete in a Division 2 individual district tournament on Saturday, which each wrestler trying to advance through the individual state tournament on his own.

“We’ll be back at it tomorrow,” Coach Johnson said. “We’ll shift our focus to the individual districts this weekend and getting our guys locked in and ready. The standard doesn’t change.”
