The Fruitport wrestling team clinched its second straight O-K Silver conference championship on Friday, and left no doubt about its superiority. running way with first place at the conference tournament.

The Trojans dominated the competition, rolling up a huge total of 239.5 points, far ahead of second-place Hopkins, which had 164.5. Belding was third with 131 points, followed by Comstock Park (113), Godwin Heights (39.5) and Kelloggsville (12).

Fruitport had seven individual weight class champions, and had wrestlers place in the top four in all 14 weight classes.

“What a way to cap off the regular season with a conference championship and carry real momentum into the postseason,” said Fruitport head coach Chad Johnson. “We knew from the beginning this would take a full team effort to bring another conference championship back to Fruitport, and these kids answered the call when it mattered most.

“Placing 14 out of 14 is an incredible accomplishment and says so much about who this team is. I’m proud of the individual achievements, but I’m even more proud of the way we continue to wrestle as one – each wrestler understanding their role, committing to it, and having the desire to give everything they have for the team.

“That kind of pride, belief and togetherness is all we can ask for, and what makes this group so special.”

Winning individual championships for Fruitport were Austin Jacobs (106 pounds), Rylan Thorsen (113), Ryder Chan (120), Zach Aardema (132), Murphy Lengkeek (138), Chase Rosema (215) and Luke Westerlund (285).

Jacobs, Thorsen and Lengkeek each defeated their championship round opponents by pin.

Finishing second in their weight classes were Emmitt Renauldo (126), Alex Aardema (144), Kalan Teeter (175) and Colton Smith (190).

Taking third were Gideon Marksbury (157) and Logan Zatko (165). Finishing fourth was Davis Johnson (150).
