FRUITPORT – The Fruitport wrestling team has become pretty powerful over the past few years.

The Trojans have won three straight Division 2 district titles, and are currently in hot pursuit of their second straight O-K Silver conference championship.

They took another step toward the conference title on Wednesday when they whipped Godwin Heights 78-6 in a home dual match, improving their league record to 3-0. They also beat Ottawa Hills 73-6 in a non-conference matchup.

Fruitport’s seniors have played a big role in building a team that can dominate like that, and they were honored on Wednesday during Senior Night ceremonies.

The Trojan seniors are Cooper Lengkeek, Kalan Teeter, Adam Marjonen, Luke Westerlund, Chase Rosema, Davis Johnson, Blair Zimmer, Hernan Cortez and Ryder Chan.

“They’ve created a standard,” said head coach Chad Johnson about his 12th-graders. “We expect this level of success from our kids and that’s what we shoot for here, year after year.

“That senior class has been a big staple in our room. It’ll be tough to see them go because we’ve counted on those guys, and a lot of them have started since they were freshmen.”

Fruitport is now 12-6 overall in dual competition and 3-0 in the O-K Silver standings.

While the overall record is not as impressive as the conference mark, there’s a reason for that. The Trojans purposefully schedule very tough non-conference opponents so they can excel against O-K Silver opponents, and continue their strong runs in the state tournament.

“We take pride in our schedule,” Coach Johnson said. “We have a tough tournament schedule on Saturdays to help us get ready for these runs.”

The goal of a repeat conference title is important to senior Cooper Lengkeek and his teammates.

“It really means a lot,” Lengkeek said. “It shows the growth we’ve had as a team. We’re showing up every day in practice and working hard. We definitely make a conference title our goal in the room. It’s something we talk about every day before practice.”

Lengkeek, the brother of freshman wrestler Murphy Lengkeek, says the Trojans benefit from having a tight bond, not just between the seniors, but between everybody on the roster.

“It’s really special,” he said. “This program means a lot. It’s good to be around all my friends. and I even have family on the team, with my little brother.”

The final test for the Trojans, at least in conference competition, will come next week when they face Kelloggsville and Hopkins in dual matches, before competing in the O-K Silver Championship Tournament on Feb. 6 at Comstock Park.
