With a roster full of experienced players back from last year’s 20-1-1 squad, the Fruitport soccer team is expected to continue to have a lot of success.

But the new season started out a bit differently than last year, when the Trojans’ only loss came in the regional finals in their final game.

Ryder Merkins

Fruitport posted an 0-3-2 record over the weekend at the season-opening Boyne Mountain Invitational, which featured a lot of great teams from around the state playing in a series of shortened games.

The Trojans opened the tournament on Friday with a 0-0 tie with Jackson Northwest, despite having a 17-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Later on Friday they lost to Birmingham Seaholm 2-1. Fruitport took a 1-0 lead midway through the second half on a goal by Ryder Merkins (assist by Jorge Burgos Yack), but Seaholm scored twice in the final seven minutes, with the winning goal coming on a late penalty kick.

The Trojans opened play on Saturday with a 1-0 loss to Detroit Country Day, with the Yellowjackets scoring the lone goal on a penalty kick.

In the second game on Saturday, Fruitport lost to Marquette 2-1. The Trojans fell behind 1-0 by halftime, then tied the score in the second half when Carter Gregor scored with an assist from Adriano Saadi. Marquette scored a late goal to seal the win.

In the final game, the Trojans played defending state champion Notre Dame Prep to a 1-1 tie. Fruitport trailed 1-0 at halftime, then got the equalizer in the second half when Hudson Hazekamp scored with an assist from Burgos Yack.

Hudson Hazekamp

“This was a gauntlet of a schedule and a physically and mentally grueling test,” said Fruitport head coach Dan Hazekamp. “The level of competition was tremendous, and although we didn’t get some of the results we were hoping for, we learned a lot about where we are at and that we can compete at a very high level.

“I’m very proud of the 25 guys who traveled with us and their contributions throughout the weekend. I’m a firm believer that this experience will help us as we navigate the season moving forward.”

Fruitport will host Ludington on Tuesday in its home opener.mini
