Six Fruitport wrestlers qualified for the Division 2 regional round after finishing among the top four in their weight classes as Saturday’s individual district tournament at Allendale High School.

Zach Aardema was Fruitport’s lone champion in the tournament, posting a perfect 4-0 record on the day and winning the 120-pound weight class.

Aardema had to work hard in the preliminary rounds to earn his title. He downed Kenowa Hills’ Chael Gowell by technical fall, 16-0; Sparta’s Steven Schmid 9-8; and Holland’s Aiden Segovia 5-4 in the semifinals.

He won the championship match by medical forfeit over Zeeland East’s Josh Ledford.

Fruitport’s Cooper Lengkeek went 2-1 on the day and finished second in the 157-pound weight class. He advanced to the finals but had to withdraw due to a medical forfeit.

Lengkeek was not seriously injured, according to Fruitport Coach Chad Johnson.

Taking third place in their weight classes for the Trojans were Ethan Riggs (215), Luke Westerlund (285), Alex Aardema (132) and Davis Johnson (138).

“What a great weekend!” Coach Johnson said. “Six wrestlers punching their tickets to the regional tournament is quite an accomplishment for our program. The boys looked great! They have been preparing for this opportunity all season long, and the grit and effort showed today.”

The six Trojans will now compete in Saturday’s Division 2 regional tournament at Cadillac, with a chance to qualify for the individual state finals.

Meanwhile, the entire Fruitport squad, which won a team district championship last week, will host a Division 2 team regional tournament on Wednesday.

Fruitport will wrestle Zeeland East at 5:30 p.m. while Greenville and Allendale will meet in the other semifinal at the same time.
