FRUITPORT — Despite an encouraging start to a rivalry matchup against Spring Lake on Friday night, the Fruitport girls basketball team couldn’t keep up with a talented Lakers squad.
The Trojans held a lead after the first quarter, but the Lakers eventually ran away with a 70-38 win.
Fruitport led by six points after the first eight minutes before Spring Lake found its groove and took over in the second and third quarters.
“I’d say we finally came out with some energy, we haven’t done that, really, yet this year,” said Fruitport head coach Brian Packard. “To have some energy going into the first quarter, we played hard, the ball went in nicely for us. Really that whole first half, we gave them everything they could handle. Now we just keep building off of that.”

Packard said the Trojans, now 0-3 on the season, have to keep working to translate what they work on in practice into game situations.
“We’ve just got to do what we know how to do,” he said. “The stuff that we work on every day, when we’re under some pressure (in a game), it just goes away. That game, we were a little bit better. Hopefully Tuesday we’re a little bit better and we just keep working and building.”
The Trojans led 15-9 after the first quarter on the strength of four three-pointers from four different players.
Spring Lake started the second quarter hot, using an 11-0 run over the first 2:30 to take the lead. The Lakers led 35-22 at halftime after outscoring Fruitport 26-7 in the second quarter.

Spring Lake controlled the third quarter, as well, with a 24-4 advantage, extending the lead to 59-26.
Fruitport outscored the Lakers 12-11 in the final quarter.
McKenzie Beardsley led Fruitport with 11 points, including three three-pointers. Lainey Bol added six points for the Trojans, followed by Lily Johnson with five and Alexa Sweet with four.
The Trojans were without starter Izzy Hanson-Wilbur, who is playing in a soccer showcase out of state.
