After having it’s season-opening match snowed out on Wednesday, the Fruitport wrestling team finally hit the mats on Saturday with a very strong performance.

The Trojans finished in second place in the 10-team Mona Shores Invitational with 161 points. Hudsonville won the title with 221 points.

Fruitport did not win the individual championship in any of the weight classes, but piled up team points with 10 wrestlers finishing either second or third.

Taking second place for the Trojans were Kaiden Barnes (106 pounds), Alex Aardema (138), Cooper Lengkeek (157) and Ethan Riggs (215).

Taking third place were Ryder Chan (113), Phillip Stone-Tyler (120), Zach Aardema (126), Davis Johnson (144), Blair Zimmer (150) and Chase Rosema (190).

“We have been excited and eager to compete,” said Fruitport Coach Chad Johnson. “A lot of hard work has been put in over the last month, and Saturday couldn’t come soon enough.

“The team looked tough. Everyone on the team got their first win of the season. We took away a lot of positives and it also gave us a scope of things we need to focus on. We’re looking forward to keep ascending throughout the season.

“We have our sites set on a big conference dual against Belding on Wednesday.”
