The Fruitport competitive cheer team continued its outstanding season with another first-place finish on Saturday, this time at the Comstock Park Invitational.
The Trojans finished first in Division 2 with 700.32 points, well ahead of second-place Northview (193.22) and third-place Sparta (549.06).
Fruitport did well in Round 1 (execution) and Round 2 (overall skills), with 214.5 and 193.22 scores, respectively, but saved its best performance for Round 3 (stunts) with a 292.6 score.
“The team worked hard over break,” said Fruitport Coach Saqora Conklin. “We had an injury that was a huge part in every round, so going into this competition we had to work hard to get people to fill in and learn new positions. They all did what they had to do to make sure the rounds didn’t have to make a major change.”
Conklin credited sophomore Izzy Mingue, saying “She stepped up and filled in where it was needed. Competing for her first time ever and you would have never known, she stepped up and earned her time in the air! I can’t wait to see her shine this season.”
The coach also credited junior Julia Smith, saying “She’s an asset for us, whether it’s round work or motivation she knows how to keep this team hype and ready to go.”
