The Fruitport girls basketball team battled hard for a 47-42 victory over North Muskegon on Friday in a holiday break non-conference game.

The victory improved the Trojans’ record to 5-1, which is one more victory than they had all of last season.

Fruitport trailed 12-10 after one quarter, then pulled ahead with a 16-6 advantage in the second quarter to take a 26-18 halftime lead.

The Trojans still had a double-digit lead, 38-26, after the third quarter, but then North Muskegon roared back in the fourth and took a two-point lead.

Fruitport’s Grace Sweet (with the ball), who led the Trojans with 21 points.

Fruitport hit four key free throws in the waning moments of the game to secure the victory.

“It was a tough game the whole way,” said Fruitport Coach Brian Packard. “It never felt like the lead was out of range for them. North Muskegon deserves a ton of credit or the way they play.”

Grace Sweet had 21 points, three rebounds and three steals, and hit two of the late free throws that sealed the victory for the Trojans. Ashton Olson finished with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals.
