Free throws matter a lot, as the Fruitport boys basketball team learned on Tuesday night.

The Trojans were outscored 14-4 from the line and ended up falling to Fruitport Calvary Christian 62-57 in a tight non-conference matchup.

Fruitport fell to 1-1 on the season.

Kyle Burke had a good night for the Trojans, scoring 21 points. DayDay Williams added 13 points while Ryan Bosch scored eight.

“First of all, congratulations to Fruitport Calvary Christian,” said Fruitport Coach Steve Erny. “They played very well tonight. This has been a local matchup for the past several years and I know they are super excited about this result, as they should be.

“On our end, we did get a lot of great looks throughout the game that just didn’t fall. We couldn’t get to the line as often as we’d like, going 4-for-7 in the game. In comparison, they were able to get to the line and go 14-for-27. That discrepancy, and our inability to knock in many good looks, became a recipe for a loss.

“We will learn from this early season loss for sure. I am excited to get back after it tomorrow with our team.” eddie
