The Fruitport baseball team played three very close conference games against Allendale this week and came away with nothing in the victory column to show for it.
The Trojans dropped both games of a doubleheader to Allendale earlier this week by identical 3-2 scores.
The frustration continued on Thursday when Fruitport came out on the short end of a 2-1 score on the Falcons’ home field.
The game was tied in the bottom of the sixth inning when Allendale’s Wyatt Merritt singled home the winning run on a 1-2 count.
“We continue to give ourselves a chance to win games with our pitching right now,” said Fruitport Coach Nick Reed. “We eventually will come through with the bats. The team works hard and will continue to grind. No doubt our offense will pick up.”
Freshman Avery Lambers pitched very well for Fruitport, scattering seven hits over six innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Trojans managed eight hits in the game. Jax Flynn had three hits while Ricky Wiggins had two.
“We played great defense,” Reed said. “Cody Nash and Jax Flynn ran down a lot of balls (in the outfield) that could have been hits. Avery pitched well enough to win, we just couldn’t come through with a big hit.”
The Trojans will return to action on Friday night at Marsh Field against Ludington.
