The Fruitport competitive cheer team kept its strong season going on Saturday by taking first place at the four-team Comstock Park Invitational.

The Trojans finished with an overall score of 670.40, ahead of second-place Grand Rapids Northview, which had a 660.72.

The Trojans were at their best in round 3 (stunting), collecting a score of 275.10, which put them over the top for the championship.

Fruitport had a 213.70 score in round 1 (jumps, creativity, motion, execution) and a 181.6 score in round 2 (overall skills, performing in unison).

“We didn’t beat our scores from the last competition, but our team looked incredible after the cleaning and drilling we did this week, leading up to this competition,” said Fruitport Coach Saqora Conklin.

Conklin credited three sophomores – Raena Norbotton, Gracie Farrell and Jada Wright – for their strong performance, particularly in round 3.

“They stated sharp, clean and fought for every stunt they put up,” Conklin said. “All around it was a very clean round 3!”

The Trojans have been on a bit of a roll, with a first-place finish at the Wyoming Lee Invitational earlier this season and a second-place finish at the Mona Shores Invitational.

“We’re doing a lot better compared to last season,” Conklin said. “The girls are showing a lot more fight and a lot more desire for success.”
