Freshman Mariah Sain scored 23 points and snagged 11 rebounds in her first varsity game, leading the Muskegon girls basketball team to an exciting 66-62 win over Kalamazoo Central in its season opener on Thursday.
The Big Reds trailed 12-10 after one quarter, led 24-23 at halftime and 43-38 after three quarters, then Kalamazoo Central rallied to tie the score 53-53 at the end of regulation.
Muskegon outscored the home team 13-9 in the overtime period to seal up the victory.
The Big Reds were strong from the free throw line all night, hitting 23 of 41 attempts, including 9 of 12 in overtime.
Ty’Veonna Davis had 19 points and seven assists and Breanna Gamble-Jones came off the bench and contributed 10 points and a team-high five steals.
Aliyah Winston added eight points for the Big Reds.
