The Ludington boys basketball team held off a comeback attempt in the second half and defeated Muskegon Heights 64-61 in a Lakes 8 conference showdown on Friday.
Ludington took an early lead, going up 17-13 after one quarter and 37-23 at half. Through the early minutes of the third, the Orioles were up 45-28. but the Tigers started closing the gap, pulling within 52-45 at the end of three quarters.
The Tigers pulled within three points late, but were unable to pull even as Ludington held on for the win.
David Schillinger scored 18 to lead the Orioles while Peyton LaCombe scored 12 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Matthew Westhouse had a double-double as well with 10 points and 10 boards. Aiden Gilcrhist scored 10 for Ludington as well.
Jakari Edwards paced Muskegon Heights with 19 points, followed by William Davis with 17.
Ludington improves to 6-4 overall and 5-0 in conference, while Muskegon Heights moves to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in conference.
O-K RED
GRAND HAVEN 57, EAST KENTWOOD 50 – The Buccaneers continued their impressive season Friday night with a solid win over the Falcons in OK-Red conference play.
Leading the Bucs was Bashir Neely with 16 points on the night, followed closely by Owen Worthington with 15, and Nic Stump with 14.
Grand Haven improves to 9-1 on their season, and 4-1 in the OK-Red.
HUDSONVILLE 55, GRANDVILLE 39 – Defense was the name of the game Friday night, as the Eagles capitalized on holding Grandville to just three points in the first quarter and won a league contest on Friday.
The Eagles offense came alive after finishing the first with a 6-3 lead, then extending their advantage to 26-16 by halftime.
Grandville cut its deficit to 35-30 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Eagles closed out the game strong with a 20-9 run.
Nate Clark led Hudsonville with15 points from the bench, while Brayden Szamrej added 14 and Mason Dykstra had 12.
The Eagles improved to 5-5 on the season and 3-2 in the OK-Red play.
O-K GREEN
MUSKEGON 74, MONA SHORES 29 – The Big Reds led 27-7 after one quarter and never looked back, picking up a rivalry win.
Anthony Sydnor led Muskegon with 16 points while David Day totaled 15 points.
Keontae Richards led the Sailors with eight points while Donovan Russel added six rebounds.
Muskegon is now 8-0 overall and 5-0 in O-K Green play while Mona Shores is 5-6 overall and 2-3 in O-K Green play.
LAKES 8
WESTERN MICHIGAN CHRISTIAN 60, MUSKEGON CATHOLIC 41 – A hot start gave the Warriors a 42-24 halftime lead on Friday.
Owen Varnado led Western Michigan Christian with 33 points and seven rebounds while Jared Olsen added 10 points.
The Warriors are now 2-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play while Muskegon Catholic falls to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in conference.
WEST MICHIGAN CONFERENCE
OAKRIDGE 69, HART 44 – The Eagles took control by jumping out to a 23-9 lead after one quarter, then built on that with an 18-11 edge in the third.
DeLora had 22 points for Oakridge while Wever added 12 and Ethan Josza tossed in 11.
Hovey scored 15 points for Hart and Bitely had 10.
CSAA
KENT CITY 65, WHITE CLOUD 35 — The Eagles got off to a fast start and cruised to a win over the Indians in CSAA Silver conference play.
Kent City started out hot, leading 14-4 after one quarter. The Eagles were up 25-16 before blowing the game open in the third. Kent City extended its lead to 51-25 after three to pull away.
Kyler Larson led the Eagles with a game-high 32 points — his second consecutive 32-point effort. Also contributing for the Eagles was Hayden Carlson, who had 17.
Kent City moves to 6-3 overall and 4-0 in conference, and remains tied for first in the CSAA Silver Conference.
FREMONT 66, REED CITY 51 – Jordan McDonald had a huge game for Fremont, totaling 26 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Joey DeLong added 15 points and six rebounds, Logan Nelson had seven points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Eli Shears had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.
ALLIANCE LEAGUE
FRUITPORT CALVARY CHRISTIAN 64, BYRON CENTER ZION CHRISTIAN 36 – Every player on the Fruitport Calvary roster scored in the win.
The Eagles built a 23-11 halftime lead, built it to 50-20 in the second half and cruised to the win.
Bradley Richards and Jacob May led Fruitport Calvary with 16 points and eight rebounds and 16 points and eights assists, respectively. Ethan Cammenga added 11 rebounds and six steals.
The Eagles improved to 7-1 on the season.
