The Grand Haven soccer team won a Division 1 district championship on Thursday in the most exciting way possible – a 1-0 decision over Holland West Ottawa in a game decided by an overtime shootout.

The game was scoreless through both the first and second half and two 10-minute overtime periods, which took it to the dramatic shootout, with five players from each team going 1-on-1 with the opposing goalie.

All five Grand Haven shooters found the mark, while only four scored for West Ottawa, so the Bucs got the win and the trophy.

Scoring shootout goals for Grand Haven were Ryan Heck, Connor Dalman, Ethan Dougherty, Luke Thayer and Grant Kik, who made the game-winner.

The Buccaneers, now 10-8-2 on the season, will play East Kentwood in the regional semifinals on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at East Kentwood.
