The Muskegon Lumberjacks did not have a happy opening weekend at the USHL Fall Classic in Pittsburgh.

The Jacks left town on Sunday with an 0-2 record on the young season following a 5-2 loss to the Sioux City Musketeers.

The good news is that they left town with a point in the standings, because they played to a regulation tie with Sioux Falls on Saturday before losing in an overtime shootout.

Penalties hurt Muskegon in the contest. They were whistled for 10 infractions for 31 minutes in the penalty box. Sioux City only scored once on seven power play opportunities, but the Jacks spent a lot of time killing off short-handed situations.

Kirklan Irey opened the scoring for Sioux City just 3:02 into the game. Ben Doran made the score 2-0 with a goal at 10:44. Muskegon cut into its deficit with a goal by Gavin McCarthy at 13:10 of the first.

Sioux City’s Ben Steeves scored the only goal  of the second period at the 15:21 mark, and the Musketeers led 3-1 at the second break.

The Musketeers iced the win with a pair of goals in the third period, from Steeves at the 1:29 mark and Irey at 6:06. Muskegon’s Tom Sinclair found the net at 4:21 of the third.

Lumberjacks goalie Cameron Korpi made his first start of the season and took the loss, stopping 27 of 32 shots.

The Lumberjacks will be back in action in Chicago on Saturday. The home opener is Oct. 15 against Chicago.
