Promising rookie Zaac Charbonneau had his first of what could be many exciting moments for the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Thursday, in the final game of the USHL Fall Classic.

Charbonneau, who had 51 goals in just 50 games for Mount St. Charles Academy last year, scored the game winning overtime goal to propel the Lumberjacks to a 3-2 victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks at USG Arena in Chicago.

The Lumberjacks, now 1-1-0 on the season, will have their season home opener a week from Friday against the Team USA Under-18 squad. The two teams will have a rematch in Muskegon the following night.

The Black Hawks opened the scoring with the lone first period goal, by Cody Sokol, at the 8:08 mark.

The Lumberjacks tied the game 1-1 with a goal just 1:11 into the second period from Strider Carhart. Charbonneau and Gustas Zemaitis each assisted on the tally.

Waterloo responded at 13:11 of the second period with a goal from Noa Nsonsa Kitala, to give the Black Hawks a 2-1 advantage heading into the third.

Muskegon’s Billy MacAusland put the puck in the net 6:28 into the third period to tie the game 2-2. Will Schlechtweg and Drew Fox were credited with assists.

Charbonneau scored the game-winning goal on a power-play just 1:53 into overtime. Felix Farhammar and Nicholas Kosiba each earned assists.

Goalie Samuel Doyon-Cataquiz earned the victory for Muskegon, stopping 22 of 24 shots. Both teams had 24 shots on goal.

The Lumberjacks were 1-for-3 on the power play while killing all four Waterloo attempts.
