Head coach Dan Hazekamp called it an “ugly win,” but the Fruitport boys soccer team managed to bounce back from their first loss of the season on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Comstock Park in O-K Silver conference play on Tuesday.

Fruitport’s Jyles Smith netted a goal in the first half to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Caleb Chandler scored in the second half, with an assist from Gavin Wilson, for the final goal of the game.

“I thought Chandler had a nice night,” Coach Hazekamp said. “He provided some needed versatility.”

While the Trojans were not able to put a lot of goals on the scoreboard, they were able to shut down Comstock Park’s attack.

Fruitport goalkeeper Sebastian Sweet only had to make one save to record the shutout.

“An ugly win on the road,” Hazekamp said about the victory. “I’m glad we could find a way to get a result. We have lots of road for improvement in all areas. I’m hoping we can regroup and come back stronger against a good Kelloggsville team.”

Fruitport, now 8-1-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, will return to action on Thursday at Kelloggsville in another O-K Silver matchup.

The Trojans will have a big non-conference game on Saturday when they visit archrival Spring Lake.
