The Fruitport boys soccer team lost a ton of good players to graduation in the spring, and nobody was sure what to expect from the Trojans this fall.

So far, however, they look as good as ever.

Fruitport posted a hard-earned 1-0 victory over an always strong Allendale squad on the road on Saturday, improving their record to 5-0-1 on the season.

The only goal of the game came midway through the first half, when senior Hudson Hazekamp converted a penalty kick. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

That turned out to be all the Trojans needed. Goalie Sebastian Sweet stopped 11 shots and the midfield and back line defenders helped keep the Falcons from tying the score.

Fruitport head coach Dan Hazekamp highlighted the play of Quincy McDaniels, Jyles Smith and Cole Luker in the attacking half of the field and Roger Camp, Hayden Taylor and Hudson Hazekamp for strong defensive play.

He named Sweet the Trojans’ “Man of the Match.”

“Allendale is a tremendous team, and to be able to travel and get a good result is an accomplishment,” the coach said. “It’s not always pretty, but the resiliency and grit the boys showed today is a great building block for us to continue to grow.

“It’s a very young team, so every experience we can work through will benefit us as we move through the season. There will be more tough non-conference tests as we get into September.”

The Trojans will host Reeths-Puffer on Wednesday in their first home game of the season.
