The Fruitport boys tennis squad opened the season on Friday by finishing in third place out of four teams at the Fruitport Invitational.

The Trojans won two singles matches and seven doubles matches and totaled nine points. They finished behind first-place North Muskegon (19 points) and Western Michigan Christian (12 points).

Fruitport finished ahead of Reeths-Puffer, which earned seven points in the event.

Fruitport’s Landon McMullin posted a 2-1 record in No. 3 singles, rallying to defeat North Muskegon’s Walter Christophersen 4-6, 6-2, 10-6, and winning another match by forfeit.

No. 2 doubles team of Dominik Kooy and Evan Olson posted a 2-1 record, defeating Reeths-Puffer’s Brody Reed and Bradley Gaunt 6-1, 6-0, and then earning a victory over Western Michigan Christian’s Indiana Jones and Daniel Grill 6-2, 6-0.

Fruitport’s No. 3 doubles tandem of Brian Meeuwenberg and Tucker Gholson went 2-1, beating WMC’s Mason Tisdel and Alfredo Fajardo 6-2, 6-1, then defeating Reeths-Puffer’s Tayte Schroeder and Nolan Vanderwall 6-1, 6-2.

No. 4 doubles team of Carson Vallie and Elijah Wierenga also went 2-1 with a close win over WMC’s Leo VandenHeuvel and Jansen DuBois, 7-6, 6-7, 10-6.

Vallie and Wierenga also cruised past R-P’s Brayden Witham and Gavin Willi 6-1, 6-0.

The Trojans No. 1 doubles team of Jackson Yandell and Jonathan Quigg went 1-2, defeating R-P’s Gabe Feirick and Braiden Eliss 6-3, 6-1.

The Trojans will travel to play Cedar Springs on Thursday.
