Before the season started, the Fruitport soccer team’s head coach, Dan Hazekamp, said he suspected that junior Quincy McDaniels might be ready to have a breakout season.
It turns out the coach may be right.
McDaniels, who had three goals all of last season, erupted for a three-goal hat trick on Saturday to give the Trojans a 3-0 victory over Grass Lake in their final game of the two-day Boyne Mountain Invitational.
[1]Caleb Chandler, Mads Naenen and Tate Marshall recorded assists on the three goals for Fruitport. Goalie Sebastian Sweet stopped two Grass Lake shots.
In the earlier game on Saturday, Fruitport played Notre Dame Prep to a 0-0 tie in a rain-shortened game. The Trojans had numerous scoring opportunities, but failed to convert. Sweet made two saves in net to preserve the deadlock.
Fruitport finished the season-opening tournament with a 3-0-1 record.

Coach Hazekamp credited Cole Luker and Caleb Chandler for solid midfield play on Saturday, and gave a nod to the defensive back line of Roger Camp, Hayden Taylor, Hudson Hazekamp, and Conner King for their performance throughout the weekend.
“I’m proud of the boys and their unselfishness throughout the tournament,” the coach said. “The bar is high, but this was a good foundational step as we turn the page to more really tough non-conference tests over the next two weeks.”
The Trojans will visit Ludington on Tuesday.
