More strong pitching allows Fruitport baseball team to come back to beat Allendale 4-2

Great pitching depth has been a real plus for the Fruitport baseball team this season, and that was the case again on Wednesday when the Trojans came from behind to beat Allendale 4-2 in a non-conference matchup.

Senior Avery Lambers, who is primarily the Trojans’ standout catcher, took the mound and pitched six innings while striking out 10 and allowing no earned runs. Dexter Lillmars came on in relief in the seventh and struck out two.

Their efforts allowed the Trojans to overcome an early deficit and gut out the victory.

Fruitport struck first in the opening inning on a perfectly executed first-and-third play that scored Satchel Norwood. Allendale answered in the second inning with a two-run triple to move in front 2-1.

The Trojans pulled ahead 3-2 in the fourth inning when Liam Campbell reached based and eventually scored on an overthrow, and Cam Bolger singled and scored on an RBI groundout by Lambers.

Fruitport added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Trevor Rusnak doubled with two outs and later scored on an Allendale error.

Leading the offense for Fruitport were Bolger, Garrett Olson and Kolten Kennedy, who each collected two hits.

“We came up with some big plays when we needed it,” said Fruitport head coach Nick Reed. “We gave ourselves plenty of opportunities to score runs and we took advantage of them in crucial spots. One through nine grinded out at-ats and found a way.”

The Trojans improved to 25-5 on the season. [5]storage [6] [7] [8] [9]mini [10] [11]
