The Fruitport girls track and field team won its first conference title in 17 years on Friday, outdistancing second-place Hopkins by 11 points at the O-K Silver Championship Meet at Comstock Park High School.

The Trojans were led by four athletes who won individual championships in five events, along with one relay team that won two events.

Fruitport finished with 149 points, followed by Hopkins (138), NorthPointe Christian (121), Calvin Christian (120), Belding (57), Godwin Heights (54) and Kelloggsville (9).

The most successful Trojan at the meet was Chloe Anderson, who won the 100-meter dash (12.45 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (26.74 seconds) and was a member of Fruitport’s champion 4×200 relay team and 4×400 relay team.

Anderson automatically qualified for the Division 2 state finals in the 100-meter with her winning time.

Other individual champions for the Trojans were Bailey Garner in the 400-meter dash (1:04.37), Zoe German in the pole vault (9 feet) and Lily Johnson in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches).

The relay team of Gen Franklin, Layla Phan, Garner and Anderson had a terrific meet, winning both the 4×200 (1:47.17) and 4×400 (4:14.57).

Johnson also qualified for the state finals for her 5 feet, 2 inch mark in the high jump.

Finishing second in their events for Fruitport were Franklin in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles and Phan in the 400-meter dash.

Taking third in their events were Sallyana Conn in the discus and Breann Cole and Garner, who tied for that spot in the pole vault competition.

Fruitport will now compete in a Division 2 regional meet on bSaturday at Allendale High School.

“The girls fought for every point,” said Fruitport head coach Randy Johnson. “They really wanted to win this one and it showed. Everyone came through with flying colors.

“We hope to keep the momentum going as we head into regionals. This will not be easy as we compete in one of the toughest regions in the state.”storagemini
