The Fruitport baseball team got a great start to a really big week on Saturday, sweeping two games from Fremont in a Wooden Bat Day doubleheader.

The Trojans won the opener 2-0. Satchel Norwood pitched a gem for the Trojans, allowing only three hits and no walks while striking out eight in a complete game.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Norwood singled, Garrett Olson and Kolten Kennedy walked, then Norwood scored on a passed ball and Olson scored on a Wyatt Fielstra squeeze bunt.

Hudson Hazekamp had three hits in the game.

The Trojans completed the sweep with an 11-3 win in Game 2.

The Trojans jumped out early with three runs in the first inning. Dexter Lillmars drove in a run with an RBI single before Norwood followed with a two-run single. Fruitport added three more in the third inning when Lillmars knocked in two more runs and Olson knocked in one.

Fruitport added five more runs in the sixth.

Avery Lambers totaled four hits while outfielder Brady Meister excelled defensively, making several nice catches and throwing out a runner at third.

“We played some really good team baseball today,”  said Fruitport head coach Nick Reed. ”Using wood bats changes the game a bit and adds an element of having to manufacture runs, and we did that today. We were also able to get some good jumps and steal some crucial bases in big moments.”

Fruitport improved to 18-4 overall.

The Trojans are 6-2 in the O-K Silver conference standings, two games behind first place Hopkins and Comstock Park. They will visit Hopkins on Monday then host Comstock Park on Tuesday in four important games.

They will wrap up their week by playing Hamilton on Wednesday at Fifth Third Ballpark, the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps.storage
