The Fruitport baseball team continued its strong start to the season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Ludington on Thursday, winning 9-3 and 11-0.
With the victories, Fruitport is now 9-1.
One big key to the sweep was the pitching performance of two freshmen.
[1]In Game 1, freshman Garrett Olson struck out 12 while throwing a complete game, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
Fruitport fell behind 1-0 in the second inning before the Trojans responded with six runs in the third to take the lead.
The Trojans added three runs in the sixth before Ludington scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Trevor Rusnak had three hits to lead the Trojan offense while Dexter Lillmars had two hits and three RBIs. Wyatt Fielstra also had two hits for Fruitport.
[3]In Game 2, freshman Kolten Kennedy threw six scoreless innings, picking up the victory while allowing just four hits and striking out two.
A three run first inning gave Fruitport a lead, then the Trojans added five runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth.
Offensively, Satchel Norwood and Rusnak each had three hits while Lillmars, Olson and Kennedy all had two.
“We got two big pitching performances out of our freshmen,” said Fruitport head coach Nick Reed. “Both Garrett and Kolton worked quickly and relied on our defense to make plays. Our bats woke up a bit and we took advantage of some mistakes from Ludington. The boys keep grinding and working hard, building up for the end of the year.”
