Winning tournaments is nothing new for Josalynn Nowicki, so it was only natural for the Fruitport tennis standout to claim a first-place medal at her school’s own event.
Nowicki, a state finals qualifier last year. plowed past three opponents in straight sets on Saturday on the way to winning the No. 1 singles championship at the Fruitport Invitational.
Nowicki defeated Ludington’s Ava Johnson 6-2, 6-2; Fremont’s Lily Deters 6-0, 6-0; and Reeths-Puffer’s Olivia Smith 6-2, 6-1.
[1]Nowicki was Fruitport’s only flight champion, but several of her teammates performed very well, helping the Trojans finish in third place in the team standings.
Reeths-Puffer and Ludington tied for the championship with 39 points apiece, followed by Fruitport with 31, Whitehall with 29, Fremont with 14 and Muskegon Catholic Central with 13.
Fruitport’sBrystol Tenhove (No. 4 singles) and Rylee Rufener and Kaitlynn Tenbrink (No. 4 doubles) both posted 2-1 records in the tournament, finished second in their flights, and also won medals.
[3]Also posting 2-1 records were Emma Fecher (No. 2 singles), Abby Poort (No. 3 singles) and Journey Rufener and Candela Pena (No. 4 doubles).
“Almost every flight finished strong, winning their last match of the day, a very long day with the rain delay in the morning,” said Fruitport head coach Brad Busscher. “Our players asserted themselves in their matches, made some adjustments, and played well.
“I felt we fought well collectively, despite being short a flight. A good indication of good things ahead for Fruitport tennis.”
