The Fruitport girls soccer team hasn’t been scoring a ton of goals, but when you don’t let the other team score at all, you don’t have to.
The Trojans won their fourth straight game, and posted their fourth straight shutout, with a 2-0 victory over Hopkins on Monday in a key O-K Silver conference battle.
Fruitport is now 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Hopkins suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 5-1 and 1-1.
The game was scoreless at halftime.
[1]Fruitport’s Amy Vanveelan finally broke the deadlock in the second half with a goal, then Regan Wilson added the final tally to sew up the victory.
Senior goalie Ava Powell made five saves to post her fourth straight shutout, with help from the defensive back line of Kaylynn Pavlich, Shea Harrison, Izzy Hanson-Wilbur and Maycee Hall.
“Credit to Hopkins, they are a physical team who came into this match with a 5-0 record,” said Fruitport head coach Kyle Hall. “Our team is responding and improving every match. We are figuring out the grit it takes to be a successful program.”
The Trojans will host Comstock Park on Wednesday in another conference matchup. The game will be dedicated to Callen Vela, a Fruitport first-grader who has been battling a rare form of cancer.
