The Fruitport boys golf team opened its 2026 season on Monday and performed well, but not quite good enough for a win.

The Trojans fell 185-179 in a dual match against Western Michigan Christian at the Muskegon Country Club.

Sophomore Chase Marcus had a very strong showing for Fruitport, leading the team with a nine-hole score of 43.

Marcus had the best score for either team on the challenging course in foggy conditions.

Tyler Cuti and Landon Lodholtz each shot a 46 for the Trojans while Eli Cuti shot a 50.

“I was very pleased with the way our guys played today,” said Fruitport head coach Nate Smith. “Coming off from spring break, you wondered how focused or rusty they might be, but they answered the call better than I expected. The guys showed a lot of poise on the course, and when they made a bad shot, they were quick to move on to the next one.

“Chase Marcus really stood out. He played very consistently and managed the course like he was a veteran varsity golfer, not a sophomore. He got some varsity experience last year, and we knew from the offseason work he put in that he was going to turn some heads. Super excited about what the future looks like for him.”

The Trojans’ were scheduled to host the first O-K Silver conference jamboree of the season on Wednesday, but it has been postponed due to rainy conditions.storagemini
