New Fruitport softball coach Katelynn Reynolds was excited to get her first season under way on Monday, even though the Trojans ended up falling 13-6 to Covenant Christian.
The outcome spoiled a big night at the plate for Fruitport’s Kalli Tawney, who hit two solo home runs.
One of those homers gave the Trojans an early lead, but Covenant Christian took control by scoring six runs in the second inning and six more in the fourth.
[1]Tawney and Kendall Lee each had two hits for the Trojans while Tatum Anderson and Maya Aldridge each added one.
Bri Chiaverini started on the mound for Fruitport and struck out five batters. Maddie Anderson also pitched and struck out two.
“We faced some challenges very quickly to start our season today, which makes it a great opportunity for us to zone in on the areas that need work,” Reynolds said. “I am proud of how the girls battled tonight, and although we have some things to clean up, I am confident in these girls for how they will bounce back and continue getting better.”
