The Fruitport baseball team opened its season on a successful note Tuesday by continuing to battle after losing a big lead and eventually downing North Muskegon 8-6 in a non-conference road game.

The Trojans jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning behind four walks, two batters hit by pitches, and RBI hits by Hudson Hazekamp and Trevor Rusnak.

The Norse answered with a big third inning, however, and tied the game at 6-6.

Fruitport regained the lead for good in the fifth inning, scoring two runs on a double by Hazekamp and an RBI double by Rusnak, who then scored on a fielder’s choice play.

Dexter Lillmars played a huge role for the Trojans, pitching four innings of shutout relief while allowing only two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Hazekamp, the starting pitcher, had five strikeouts.

Rusnak and Satchel Norwood were credited for making strong defensive plays for the Trojans.

Fruitport will host Covenant Christian on Thursday.
