The Fruitport wrestling team had another great outing on Saturday at the Division 2 individual district wrestling tournament at Gaylord High School.

Three Trojans won district championships in their weight classes, and a total of nine placed in the top four of their classes and qualified for individual regionals, one step away from the state finals.

“We’re proud to qualify nine wrestlers,” said Fruitport head coach Chad Johnson. “That shows the consistency and work they’ve put in all season.”

Taking first place for the Trojans were Murphy Lengkeek (132 pounds), Zach Aardema (126) and Rylan Thorsen (113).

Lengkeek, a freshman, won his title by going 4-0 on the day, with all of his victories coming by pin.

“Murph dominated on the mat, earning the title with several pins,” Coach Johnson said. “His relentless energy and competitive edge make him a wrestler to watch in the future.”

Aardema, a junior, went 3-0 and also won his matches in dominant fashion, posting two pins and a technical fall. He now has two individual district titles in his career.

“Zach continues to set the standard and remains focused on what’s ahead, determined to improve day by day,” Johnson said.

Thorsen, another freshman, also went 3-0 and took the more difficult route to his title, gutting out three full-length victories by decision.

“Rylan stepped up in a big way today,” Johnson said. “Entering as the underdog, he defeated multiple ranked opponents on his way to capturing his first district championship, an incredible accomplishment for a freshman!”

Six other Trojans also did what they had to do to stay alive in the individual tournament and advance to regionals.

Taking second place in their weight classes were Alex Aardema (138), Cooper Lengkeek (150), Colton Smith (190), Chase Rosema (215) and Adam Marjonen (285).

Luke Westerlund finished fourth at 285 and also advanced to regionals.

The Trojans will now turn their attention to team regionals after winning a team district championship last week. They will compete on Wednesday, once again in Gaylord.storage
