Fruitport girls build a big lead, then hang on to down Kellloggsville 36-33

The Fruitport girls basketball team will head into Tuesday’s home game against Belding with some momentum after Friday’s exciting win over Kelloggsville.

Ava Powell hit a pair of free throws as the clock ran down to give the Trojans a 36-33 victory.

Fruitport had a large lead earlier in the game, but had to hang on down the stretch.

The Trojans led 13-9 after one quarter and 21-12 at halftime. Cierra Fri powered Fruitport with a big first half, scoring 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Fruitport was outscored 8-7 in the third quarter but still led 28-20 headed into the fourth.

Kelloggsville rallied in the final quarter and made it close, but Powell’s free throws allowed the Trojans to hang on.

Hanson-Wilbur and Fri each finished with 14 points.

“We did just enough as a team to get the win, but we are very happy with the result,” said Fruitport head coach Brian Packard. “Looking forward to getting back at it. There’s going to be a lot of games in a short span of time.”

The Trojans are now 5-6 overall and 3-3 in O-K Silver conference play. They will battle Belding for third place in the conference standings on Tuesday. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]storage [9]
