Fruitport girls battle to the end, but fall to Godwin Heights in another close game

It wasn’t that long ago that the Fruitport girls basketball team lost a lot of games by a lot of points.

Those days appear to be over. The Trojans don’t always win, but they have been very much in every game they have played lately.

Fruitport fell to Godwin Heights 51-46 on Monday in an O-K Silver conference matchup.

That outcome adds to the list of close games the Trojans have won and lost in recent weeks. They beat Kelloggsville by three, lost to Belding by four and beat Comstock Park by eight in their three previous games.

“This was another classic conference game for us,” said Fruitport head coach Brian Packard. “We were in it the whole night. Another physical, fast game. Godwin definitely had the advantage in the first half in the offensive rebounding department, then we really battled back. [3]

“We had a lot of girls with hustle plays and diving and getting after it. Just couldn’t get that last timely stop and score needed. Came out on the losing side, but played well and it’s good to be in games all night.”

Fruitport led 12-9 after one quarter and 23-21 at halftime. The score was tied 34-34 after three quarters before Godwin Heights stole the win with a 17-12 edge in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Regan Wilson led the Trojans with 15 points. Lily Johnson added 10 points while Kya Tawney and Cierra Fri each had eight. [4] [5] [6]storage [7]mini [8] [9]
