The Fruitport girls basketball team used balanced scoring and a really big third quarter to overcome a deficit and post a very nice 55-47 victory over Comstock Park in O-K Silver conference action on Friday.
The Trojans have now won two out of their last three, and could easily be 3-for-3, except for a very close overtime loss to Belding on Tuesday.
The coolest part is that the Trojans have been finding a way to perform well without leading scorer Izzy Hansen-Wilbur, who is out with an ankle injury. Eight different Trojans recorded points on Friday, led by Cierra Fri with 13 points, Ava Powell with 10 and Alexa Sweet and Regan Wilson with nine points apiece.

“It’s nice that in back-to-back games we have had the ability to have different players step up when needed,” said Fruitport head coach Brian Packard, whose team is now 6-7 overall on the season and 4-4 in conference play.
The Trojans got off to a shaky start. The game was tied 7-7 after one quarter, and Comstock Park had a 17-13 edge in the second quarter and led 24-20 at halftime.
The Trojans found their offense in the third quarter, outscoring their visitors 24-13 to take control of the game. Powell and Sweet each scored six points in the third, with Sweet tossing down two triples.

Fruitport nailed down the victory with an 11-10 edge in the fourth quarter, led by Fri’s five points.
“We got off to a really slow start offensively,” Packard said. “We made some silly turnovers that kept us from getting into a good rhythm. We found some rhythm in the second quarter but couldn’t get any timely stops.
“The third quarter was a different story. We turned it up on defense and hit some shots. Alexa Sweet hit two big ones to kind of get us rolling. Our bigs, Kya Tawney and Ava Powell, did a great job of being strong all night. Ava is starting to find her stride in the post a little more and it was nice to see her put the ball through the hoop.
“Our guards turned it up a notch defensively and were swarming a little bit better in the second half.”
