The Fruitport boys basketball team has won a conference championship for the second year in a row.’

The only remaining question is whether the Trojans will have the title all to themselves, or have to share it with someone.

One day after losing their first conference game of the season, and ending an impressive 15-game winning streak, the Trojans bounced back on Tuesday with a 76-58 victory over Godwin Heights.

Fruitport is now 18-3  overall on the season and 12-1 in the O-K Silver. The 18th win is the most in one season in program history, breaking the 17-win record set last year.

The Trojans can clinch the outright conference championship on Friday with a victory against Calvin Christian on the road,

The game will also be a chance for revenge, because the Squires beat the Trojans on Monday, ending the long winning streak.

“This was a good way to respond after a disappointing game just one day ago,” said Fruitport head coach Steve Erny. “Our guys came out with a lot more fire and played well as a team on the offensive side of the ball.

“Tonight’s win breaks the school single-season record for wins, set just one year ago. It also secures a conference championship, at least a share, for the second year in a row. That is something for this group to be proud of, but they also know we have big games ahead and will be focused on what is still in front of us.”

The Trojans had a typically slow start and led 15-13 after one quarter, then opened up and led 37-28 at halftime and 57-45 after three quarters.

Dexter Lillmars and DayDay Williams, the two leading scorers all season, both pumped in 20 points for Fruitport while Garrett Olson added 12 and Hudson Hazekamp scored nine.

“DayDay and Dexter not only each scored 20 points, but also got back to making those effort plays by rebounding and making plays for others as well,” Erny said.

“Garrett Olson also did excellent on the boards and played a solid game. He continues to grow as a player as he is gaining experience, and has had some of his best games of the year in recent weeks. Hudson Hazekamp worked hard defensively and did a lot of the dirty work tonight.”storagemini
