Fruitport boys basketball team’s 15-game win streak ends with a stunning loss to Calvin Christian

The Fruitport boys basketball team’s incredible 15-game winning streak was a lot of fun, but it couldn’t last forever.

The Trojans, who were on a super emotional high following a dramatic come-from-behind overtime victory over NorthPointe Christian on Friday, came out flat on Monday and lost 51-39 to Calvin Christian in an O-K Silver conference makeup game.

Fruitport is now 17-3 overall on the season and 11-1 in conference play. [1]

The loss is not a deadly blow to Fruitport’s drive for a second straight O-K Silver championship. A win against Godwin Heights on Tuesday would clinch at least a tie for the title, and a win over Calvin Christian in a rematch on Friday would clinched the outright championship.

The game was pretty even in the first quarter, and Calvin Christian led 11-10 at the first buzzer.

The trouble started in the second quarter, when Calvin outscored the Trojans 13-3 and grabbed a 24-13 lead at halftime.storage [2]

The Squires had an 11-9 advantage in the third quarter and led 35-22 heading in the fourth. Fruotport had a 17-16 edge down the stretch, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.

“Tonight was not our night,” said Fruitport head coach Steve Erny. “We struggled on both ends of the floor, but especially offensively. We will grow from this and fix things as we continue to fight for a conference championship and head into the postseason.”

Dexter Lillmars led the Trojans with 12 points and added three steals. DayDay Williams scored 11 points. The top rebounders were Garrett Olson with five and Hudson Hazekamp with four.mini [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
