Fruitport’s Ava Powell hit a putback bucket following a missed three throw with under a minute left on Tuesday, giving the Fruitport girls basketball team a thrilling 51-50 victory over Belding in an O-K Silver conference road game.

The Trojans trailed for a good part of the game, but kept battling all the way to the end to get the win.

Fruitport trailed 10-7 after a quiet first quarter, then outscored the Black Knights 20-17 in the second quarter, leaving the game tied 27-27 at halftime.

Izzy Hanson-Wilbur: 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists.

Ciera Fri hit three triples in the second quarter for the Trojans while Izzy Hanson-Wilbur added six points.

Belding had a 12-9 edge in the third quarter and led 39-36 headed into the fourth. Hanson-Wilbur scored all nine of the Trojans’ points in the quarter.

Fruitport stole the win with a 15-11 edge in the fourth.

The Trojans trailed 49-48 with 48 seconds left when Kaya Tawney drove to the rim and drew a foul. She hit one free throw to tie the score and missed the second, but Powell snagged the rebound and hit the putback to give Fruitport 51-49 lead.

Ciera Fri: 14 points, 6 rebounds.

A Belding player was fouled and went to the line with no time left on the clock. She hit the first shot but missed the second, allowing the Trojans to hang on to the win.

Kendall Lee scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter for Fruitport while Powell added four.

“Belding has two of the best shooters that I have seen up close, and they gave us all we could handle,” said Fruitport head coach Brian Packard. “The girls made winning play after winning play all game long. Very proud of this team for winning a tough game on the road.”

Hanson-Wilbur finished with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists. Fri totaled 14 points, six rebounds and one assist. Lee pulled down nine rebounds and had two assists.storage
