Fruitport wrestlers Zach Aardema and Murphy Lengkeek both had great performances on Saturday, posting perfect 5-0 records at their team’s own Fruitport Legends Tournament on Saturday.
They both helped the Trojans post a 3-2 record against quality opponents in a challenging series of team dual matches.
Aardema, a junior wrestling at 132 pounds, had two pins among his five victories. He improved to 15-2 on the season. Lengkeek, a freshman wrestling at 138 pounds, recorded three pins. He is now 12-5 on the season.

“Zachary and Murphy are wrestling at an extremely high level right now,” said Fruitport head coach Chad Johnson. “Their relentless work ethic in the wrestling room and throughout the offseason is clearly paying off.
“Zachary has picked up right where he left off as a state qualifier last year, while Murphy, as a freshman, has been turning heads by flying under the radar and quickly making a name for himself.”
In the team competition, Fruitport defeated Kent City 42-30 and Grant 62-15. The Trojans tied Reeths-Puffer 40-40, but won the match by a tiebreaker rule because they had fewer weight class forfeits.
The Trojans fell to Greenville 46-18 and Portland 40-28.

Rylan Thorsen (113 pounds) and Luke Westerlund (285) also performed very well for Fruitport, posting 4-1 records on the day.
“What an exciting tournament to host,” Coach Johnson said. “We brought in high-level competition, and our team stepped up to the challenge. The dual meets were extremely competitive all day long, and some of the scores don’t truly reflect how hard-fought those matches were.
“I’m proud of the way we competed as a team. We are continuing to grow, improve, and prepare ourselves for the postseason.”
