The Fruitport girls bowling team was bound to lose sooner or later – and it finally happened on Thursday following nother victory on Wednesday – but the Trojans head into the new week still very much in contention for an O-K Silver conference championship.
Last week started on a good note for the Trojans, who remained undefeated following a 24-6 win over Kelloggsville. The victory gave the Trojans a 6-0 overall record, which doubled the team’s win total from last season.
The match started out slowly, with the Trojans losing the first baker game, but they won the second, along with the bonus points, and had a 6-4 lead.

Fruitport won Game 1 in the regular round 567-365, earning four points. Harper Simila, Mya Herrygers, Ava Bradshaw and Gen Franklin each won their individual matchups, adding four more points, and the Trojans led 14-5.
The Trojans also won Game 2, 498-341, for another four points. Franklin, Herrygers, Simila and Maddie Smith won their individual matchups, tacking on four more points, and Fruitport led 22-6.
Bradshaw had the high score in Game 1 with a 125 and Smith had the high score in Game 2 with a 110.
Fruitport also captured the two regular game pin total bonus points, resulting in the final score.
The Trojans finally experienced their first loss of the season on Thursday, falling to Belding 17.5 to 12.5.
They dug themselves an early hole by losing both baker games and falling behind 10-0.
Fruitport rebounded in Game 1 of the regular rounds, winning 666-535. Smith, Herrygers. Simila and Kyleigh O’Connell won their individual matchups, and suddenly the Trojans only trailed 11-8.
The comeback fell short in Game 2, however, which Belding won 620-560 and gained four points. Fruitport only had two individual matchup victories, by Simila and O’Connell, who earned one team point apiece. Franklin tied in her matchup and earned a half point.
Simila had the high score for Fruitport in both games, with a 156 and 157.
Fruitport and Belding are now both 4-1 in the conference standings.
“I am proud of the whole team for not quitting when they were behind,” said Fruitport head coach Tim McKeeby. “We are mentally tough and will use the next few days to recharge and regroup. Despite the loss, our goal to win a conference title has not changed.”
