The Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Wrestling Tournament – popularly known as the city tournament – is quickly becoming a favorite event for the Lengkeek family.

Last year Fruitport’s Cooper Lengkeek won his first individual individual championship at the GMAA tournament, which pits every high school team in Muskegon County against each other.

On Saturday the senior did it again, winning the title in the 157-pound division.

His younger brother, freshman Murphy Lengkeek, got in on the fun on Saturday, taking the title in the 138-pound division.

Two other Trojans – Austin Jacobs (106 pounds) and Zach Aardema (132) – also won individual titles, and the four champions helped Fruitport post a very strong second-place finish in the final team standings.

The Trojans finished with 202 points, right behind perennial champion Whitehall, which took first place again with 206 points. Twelve teams competed in the tournament.

“I’m so proud of the way our team came together, competing with passion and energy, and giving ourselves a shot at a championship,” said Fruitport head coach Chad Jonson. “While we came up just four points short, every wrestler met their assignment and gave it their all – that’s all I could ever ask.

“Of course, I wish we had won, but at the end of the day, we put up a tremendous effort and represented Fruitport well. Heck of a tournament for the Trojans!”

Cooper Lengkeek won his title by winning all three of his matches, all by pin.

GMAA champion Zach Aardema

He pinned Holton’s Rowen Bean in 1:22 in the quarterfinals, Orchard View’s Xander Randall in 2:50 in the semifinals, and Muskegon’s Lamar Bradford in 3:46 in the 157-pound title match.

“Coop came out swinging on Saturday, pinning everyone in his path!” Coach Johnson said. “Watching him dominate the mat and claim his second city title was electric!”

Murphy Lengkeek also went 3-0, pinning Mona Shores’ Emmerick Smith in just 49 seconds in the quarterfinals and North Muskegon’s Will Bahorski in 1:56 in the semifinals.

He won the championship match with an exciting 4-1 overtime victory over Whitehall’s Max Krukowski.

GMAA champion Murphy Lengkeek

“Murphy had an incredible day at his first GMAA tournament, taking down a highly-ranked senior from Whitehall in the finals,” Johnson said. “I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Murph walk away with four city titles before his career is over.”

Jacobs, also a freshman, went 3-0 to claim the title at 106 pounds. He pinned Orchard View’s Garrett Rademacher in 35 seconds in the quarterfinals, and did the same to Holton’s Jackson Domanski in just 39 seconds in the semifinals.

Jacobs won his championship match by downing Whitehall’s Robert Belinger 13-7.

“Jacobs keeps raising the bar with incredible tournaments,” Johnson said. “Even feeling a bit under the weather, he showed up fired up and claimed his first highly-coveted city title as a freshman.”

Aardema won his second consecutive GMAA title with a slightly easier path. As the top seed in his weight class, he drew byes in the first two rounds and went straight to the semifinals.

He wrestled great when he had to, beating Reeths-Puffer’s Cory Judd 8-1 in the semifinals and Whitehall’s Cody Manzo by a 14-2 major decision in the finals.

“Zach came into the tournament as the number one seed and absolutely delivered,” Johnson said. “With a dominant 14-2 major in the finals, he clinched back-to-back city titles.”

Several other Trojans placed high in their weight classes and won crucial team points.

Colton Smith was runner-up at 190 pounds, going 2-1 and falling in the finals. Chase Rosema was runner-up at 215 pounds, also winning two matches and losing in the finals.

Luke Westerlund (285 pounds) and Rylan Thorsen (113 pounds) finished third and Alex Aardema (144 pounds) finished fourth.mini
